Clothing Care Label Symbols Guide — What Those Laundry Symbols Really Mean

Clothing Care Label Symbols Guide

You pull out a favorite blazer, check the label, and see a circle inside a square with a single dot. What does it mean? If you have ever stared at clothing care symbols wondering what they mean, you are not alone.

This guide covers every standard care label symbol and when to bring a garment to the dry cleaner instead of risking it at home. Understanding your care labels is the best way to extend the life of your wardrobe.

The Five Categories of Care Label Symbols

International care symbols fall into five main categories:

  1. Washing — tub/basin symbol
  2. Bleaching — triangle symbol
  3. Drying — square symbol
  4. Ironing — iron symbol
  5. Dry Cleaning — circle symbol

Washing Symbols (Tub/Basin)

The basic wash symbol is a stylized tub of water. Lines underneath and temperature inside vary the instruction:

  • Tub with no lines — machine wash, normal cycle
  • Tub with one line — permanent press cycle
  • Tub with two lines — gentle/delicate cycle
  • Hand in tub — hand wash only
  • Tub with X — do not wash (dry clean only)

Numbers inside the tub indicate maximum water temperature in Celsius: 30C = cool, 40C = warm, 60C = hot.

Bleach Symbols (Triangle)

  • Empty triangle — any bleach allowed
  • Triangle with two diagonal lines — only non-chlorine bleach
  • Triangle with X — do not bleach

Never bleach a garment labeled dry clean only. Bleach permanently damages wool, silk, and many synthetics.

Drying Symbols (Square)

  • Square with circle inside — tumble dry okay
  • Circle with one dot in square — tumble dry low heat
  • Circle with two dots in square — tumble dry medium heat
  • Circle with three dots in square — tumble dry high heat
  • Square with X over circle — do not tumble dry; air dry instead
  • Square with horizontal line inside — dry flat

Ironing Symbols (Iron Shape)

  • Iron with one dot — iron on low heat (synthetics)
  • Iron with two dots — iron on medium heat (wool, polyester blends)
  • Iron with three dots — iron on high heat (cotton and linen)
  • Iron with X — do not iron

Dry Cleaning Symbols (Circle)

The circle is the universal symbol for professional dry cleaning:

  • Plain circle — dry clean, any solvent
  • Circle with P inside — dry clean, any solvent except trichloroethylene
  • Circle with F inside — dry clean with petroleum solvents only
  • Circle with X over it — do not dry clean
  • Circle with one line underneath — gentle dry cleaning process

When Dry Clean Only Really Means It

Fabrics that almost always require professional care:

  • Wool and cashmere — shrink and felt in warm water
  • Silk — water marks, color change, texture damage
  • Structured garments — lined suit jackets, blazers with fused interfacing
  • Velvet — flattens and water-marks permanently
  • Acetate and rayon blends — shrink and distort in water

Houston Humidity and Care Labels

Houston's climate creates specific challenges for stored garments. Humidity promotes mildew and yellowing in clothes stored without proper cleaning. Always dry clean seasonal garments — especially wool and cashmere — before storing, even if they appear clean. Body oils and soiling accelerate yellowing and attract insects over time.
