How to Remove Foundation and Makeup Stains from Clothing

Makeup stains are among the most common — and most mishandled — garment stains we treat at River Oaks Cleaners. Foundation alone transfers onto collar edges, necklines, sleeves, and dress bodices hundreds of times a day in Houston. The good news: most makeup stains are treatable if you act correctly and quickly.

The bad news: makeup products vary enormously in composition, and the wrong treatment for your specific product can make the stain significantly worse.

Types of Makeup Stains and How They Behave

Liquid Foundation and Concealer

Modern liquid foundations typically contain pigment suspended in silicone, oil, or water base, plus emollients and sometimes SPF ingredients (which are themselves oil-based). The result is a stain that has both oil-soluble and water-soluble components, making it complex to treat.

Treatment approach: Blot excess immediately. For cotton and synthetics, apply a small amount of dish soap to the stain, work gently, and rinse with cool water. Do not rub. Check for residue before drying — heat from a dryer permanently sets oil-based foundation.

Powder Foundation, Blush, and Eyeshadow

Powder makeup is primarily pigment and binders — relatively simpler than liquid formulations. The mistake most people make: blowing or rubbing the powder, which drives it deeper into the weave.

Treatment approach: Shake off loose powder. Then use a lint roller or tape to lift as much as possible before any wet treatment. For light staining, a gentle brush and cold water may be sufficient. For deeper staining, dish soap and cool water rinse.

Mascara and Eyeliner

Waterproof mascara and eyeliner are among the most stubborn makeup stains. They're designed to resist water and oil — which is exactly what makes them challenging to remove from fabric.

Treatment approach: For non-waterproof formulas, dish soap and cool water. For waterproof formulas, you need an oil-based solvent — a small amount of coconut oil, mineral oil, or baby oil applied to the stain before dish soap can help break down the waterproof formula first. Rinse thoroughly.

Lipstick

Lipstick contains wax, oil, and dye — a triple threat. We have a separate guide for lipstick specifically, but the key rules are: don't rub, don't use hot water, and for any delicate fabric, come straight to us.

The Collar Transfer Problem

One of the most common makeup stains we treat is foundation transferred to collar edges — on men's dress shirts (from partners or hugs), women's blouses, and jacket collar linings. This often goes unnoticed until laundry day, when the stain has had hours or days to set.

For collar foundation stains:

  • Check collars after every wear before laundering
  • Pre-treat with dish soap before machine washing cotton shirts
  • For dress shirts with stiff collar interlinings, bring to us — home washing can damage the collar structure
  • For suit jacket collars and linings, dry clean only — water can warp the collar canvas

Fabric-Specific Warnings

  • Silk — do not apply oil-based treatments; they can leave permanent oil rings. Bring to us.
  • Wool and cashmere — cold water only, no rubbing; professional cleaning strongly recommended
  • Dry-clean-only labels — no home treatment; bring directly to a cleaner
  • White and light fabrics — test any treatment on hidden area first; some formulas discolor light fabrics
  • Formal and evening wear — gowns and special-occasion pieces should always go to a professional after makeup contact
