How to Care for Sequin and Beaded Clothing in Houston

Sequin dresses, beaded gowns, and heavily embellished garments are some of the most stunning pieces in any wardrobe — and some of the most fragile. Houston's gala season, holiday parties, and year-round wedding celebrations mean many of our customers bring us sequin and beaded pieces regularly.

At River Oaks Cleaners, we've cared for everything from simple sequin tops to full beaded couture gowns. Here's what we've learned about keeping embellished garments beautiful for years.

Why Sequin and Beaded Garments Need Special Care

The core challenge with embellished clothing is that the embellishments and the base fabric often have incompatible care requirements:

  • Sequins are typically made of plastic, metal-coated plastic, or occasionally metal. Many plastics dissolve or warp in certain dry cleaning solvents, and hot water causes shrinkage in the fabric the sequins are sewn onto.
  • Glass beads are relatively durable but can crack if tumbled against hard surfaces. The thread holding them is often more delicate than the beads themselves.
  • Seed beads and bugle beads are small and numerous — a single broken thread can cause cascading bead loss.
  • Beading on silk or chiffon creates a tension problem: the beads add weight that stretches delicate fabric over time, and the sewing holes are vulnerability points under any mechanical stress.
  • Metallic thread embroidery — often combined with beading — can tarnish with moisture and break with agitation.

The General Rule: Dry Clean, Handle with Care

For most sequin and beaded garments, professional dry cleaning is the safest approach. However, not all dry cleaning processes are appropriate for every embellished piece. A good dry cleaner will:

  • Test sequin reaction to the specific solvent being used before cleaning the whole garment
  • Turn the garment inside-out and place it in a mesh bag to protect surfaces
  • Use a gentle cycle rather than standard agitation
  • Hand-press rather than machine-press to protect embellishments
  • Avoid steam directly on plastic sequins (heat warps them)

Tell your cleaner about the materials when you bring it in. The more information we have, the better we can protect the piece.

What About Hand Washing?

Some sequin tops and casual embellished pieces can be hand-washed, but only if:

  • The care label specifically permits it (and says "Gentle" or "Hand Wash Only")
  • The base fabric is cotton or a synthetic that handles water
  • The sequins are firmly attached (test by running your thumb gently against the direction of the sequins)
  • There is no metallic thread embroidery

If hand washing: use cold water only, a gentle detergent, and minimal agitation. Do not wring. Lay flat to dry — hanging will stretch the garment under the weight of the embellishments. Never put in the dryer.

Special Situations: Storage and Repair

Storing Embellished Garments

Store sequin and beaded garments flat or folded (not on a hanger, which stresses the shoulder embellishments) in a breathable cotton garment bag. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture. Cedar blocks deter moths without chemicals that might react with certain dyes.

Loose or Missing Beads

If beads or sequins begin to fall off, address it before cleaning — agitation during cleaning will accelerate the loss. A skilled seamstress can re-stitch loose embellishments. Ask us about our alterations service for minor repairs to embellished garments.

After Houston Galas and Holiday Parties

Houston's charity gala season (October through April) and holiday party season generate a steady stream of embellished garments needing post-event care. Common issues we see:

  • Antiperspirant and sweat residue under the arms (this hardens and yellows over time if not treated)
  • Wine and cocktail splashes on light-colored embellished fabric
  • Transfer makeup from close dancing or photography
  • General body oil and perfume accumulation

The rule after any event: bring it in for cleaning before storing it. Body oils and food residue left on a garment through the off-season feed moths and cause fiber breakdown that appears as yellowing or thinning fabric.
