How to Remove Paint from Clothes in Houston | River Oaks Cleaners
Paint on Your Clothes — Act Fast and Act Smart
Paint stains are a special challenge because the rules change depending on the type of paint. Latex (water-based) paint behaves completely differently from oil-based paint, and using the wrong approach can set the stain permanently. Here's what you need to know — from the professionals at River Oaks Cleaners, serving Greater Houston since 1989.
Wet Latex Paint: Act Immediately
Latex paint is water-soluble while wet, which is your window of opportunity. If you catch it fresh:
- Blot immediately — Use a clean damp cloth to blot up as much paint as possible. Don't rub — that drives the paint deeper into the fibers.
- Rinse under cold running water — From the back of the fabric, run cold water through the stain to push it out of the weave.
- Apply dish soap or liquid laundry detergent — Work it gently into the stained area and rinse again. Repeat as needed.
- Machine wash as normal — Once most of the paint is gone, launder according to the care label.
Houston's heat and humidity speed up paint drying, so act as quickly as possible. Once latex paint dries, it becomes a polymer film that won't respond to water at all.
Dried Latex Paint: A Harder Problem
If the paint has dried, try softening it with rubbing alcohol before attempting removal. Soak the area for a few minutes, then try to peel or scrape the paint film off gently. Isopropyl alcohol works on many fabrics but test on a hidden seam first. Even then, full removal is unlikely without professional help for dried latex.
Oil-Based Paint: Don't Use Water
Oil-based paint requires a solvent-based approach:
- Use mineral spirits or turpentine, applied sparingly to the stain
- Blot (don't rub) from the outside of the stain toward the center
- Then treat with dish soap to break down the solvent residue
- Rinse thoroughly
Important: Never use water on wet oil-based paint — it spreads the stain. And never use turpentine or mineral spirits on silk, acetate, or any delicate dry-clean-only fabric.
When to Call a Houston Dry Cleaner
Some paint situations call for professional intervention from the start:
- Oil-based paint on any delicate or dry-clean-only fabric — Solvents applied incorrectly can destroy dyes and weaken fibers
- Dried paint on a structured garment (suit, blazer, coat) — Home scraping can pull the fabric or distort the shape
- Spray paint — Automotive and craft spray paints often contain resins that require specialized solvent treatments
- Painted embellishments or decorative coatings — Some specialty fabrics have intentional paint-like finishes that require expert assessment
At River Oaks Cleaners, our trained technicians identify the paint type and fabric composition before treating a stain. We've successfully removed paint from everything from work clothes to designer gowns. Don't risk a valuable garment on a DIY guess.
