How to Care for Swimwear and Beachwear in Houston's Summer Heat
Houston's pool season is one of the longest in the country — running from May through October. That means your swimwear, cover-ups, and beach clothing take a serious beating over nearly six months of chlorine, salt water, sunscreen, and Houston's intense UV. With the right care, you can keep your favorite pieces looking great all season and into next year. With the wrong care, a single summer can ruin them.
Why Swimwear Degrades So Fast
Most swimwear is made from spandex/Lycra blended with nylon or polyester. These materials are excellent for stretch and shape retention — but they have specific enemies:
- Chlorine — breaks down elastic fibers, causing swimwear to lose its stretch and fit permanently over time. High chlorine concentrations (like a recently "shocked" pool) can damage a suit in a single session.
- Sunscreen — especially chemical sunscreens containing avobenzone, which reacts with pool chlorine and iron in water to create orange discoloration. Sunscreen residue can also clog fabric fibers and make colors dull.
- Salt water — salt is abrasive and dehydrating to elastic fibers. Like chlorine, leaving salt water to dry in a suit without rinsing degrades the Lycra faster.
- Heat — machine washing on hot or tumble drying destroys elastic fibers. A single trip through a hot dryer can permanently alter the shape and fit of a swimsuit.
- UV exposure — prolonged sun exposure fades colors and weakens synthetic fibers over time.
After Every Swim: The Right Routine
The most damage-preventing step costs nothing and takes 30 seconds:
- Rinse immediately in cool, clean water. Before you leave the pool or beach, rinse your suit. This removes chlorine, salt, and sunscreen before they can bond to the fibers. Cool water is essential — hot water opens fibers and allows chemicals to penetrate deeper.
- Don't wring or twist. Wringing distorts the fabric and stresses the elastic. Gently press the water out instead.
- Lay flat or hang to dry in shade. Never ball up a wet suit in your bag and forget about it — this creates mildew and permanently distorts the shape. Don't put it in direct sunlight to dry, as UV fades colors.
How to Wash Swimwear Correctly
After each use (or at least after each pool day), wash your swimsuit:
- Hand wash in cool water with a small amount of gentle, liquid detergent (or a product specifically designed for swimwear like Soak or Woolite Dark).
- Never use a washing machine if you can avoid it. The agitation and spin cycle stress elastic fibers. If you must machine wash, use a mesh laundry bag and the delicate/gentle cycle on cold.
- Never machine dry. Lay flat on a clean towel in the shade. Reshape while damp.
- Never dry clean. The solvents used in dry cleaning dissolve the elastic in most swimwear fabrics.
Caring for Cover-Ups and Beachwear
Cover-ups vary widely in material — and the care depends on the fabric, not just the category:
- Cotton or linen cover-ups: Most are machine washable in cold water. Check the label. If they've absorbed sunscreen, a pre-treat with dish soap before washing can help remove the oil-based residue.
- Silk or chiffon cover-ups: Handle with care. Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, or bring to a dry cleaner. Sunscreen on silk is particularly damaging — treat any spots immediately before washing, or bring it in.
- Structured or embellished cover-ups (beaded trim, embroidery, lace): Professional cleaning is recommended to prevent damage to the decorative elements.
- Rash guards: Treat like swimwear — rinse immediately, hand wash, lay flat to dry.
Dealing with Sunscreen Stains
Sunscreen stains on light-colored swimwear are one of the most common complaints we see at River Oaks Cleaners. The orange or yellow discoloration comes from a chemical reaction between avobenzone (in chemical sunscreens) and chlorine or iron in water. Prevention is key:
- Allow sunscreen to fully absorb into your skin (at least 15–20 minutes) before getting into the water
- Use mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) — it doesn't react with chlorine the same way
- Rinse your suit immediately after pool use
For existing sunscreen discoloration on cover-ups or casual beach clothing (not spandex swimwear), a paste of baking soda and water worked into the affected area before washing can help. For delicate fabric or persistent staining, professional treatment is your best bet.
When to Bring Swimwear and Beachwear to River Oaks Cleaners
We do not recommend dry cleaning standard spandex/nylon swimwear — the solvents damage the elastic. But there are situations where professional help is the right call:
- Silk, chiffon, or linen cover-ups that have absorbed sunscreen or other stains
- Embellished or structured beachwear — anything with beading, embroidery, or structured elements
- Stains that won't come out with home washing — especially sunscreen orange staining, food, or mold from storing wet items
- Designer or expensive cover-ups where you can't risk home washing
Make Your Summer Pieces Last
A good swimsuit or cover-up is an investment — especially in Houston where pool season is half the year. The rinse-immediately-and-hand-wash routine takes less than five minutes and can double the life of your swimwear. Houston's water is also particularly hard (high mineral content), which adds another layer of stress to swimwear fibers over time — another reason the cold-water rinse matters.
