How to Remove Gum from Clothes in Houston | River Oaks Cleaners
Got Gum on Your Clothes? Here's What to Do.
Gum is one of the most stubborn things to land on a garment. It adheres aggressively to fabric fibers and resists conventional cleaning. The good news: with the right approach — or a call to your local dry cleaner — gum doesn't have to be permanent. Houston's heat only makes gum stickier, so act fast and follow these professional tips from River Oaks Cleaners.
Step 1: Freeze the Gum — Don't Pull It
The instinct is to pull or scrape the gum off immediately. Don't. That smears it deeper into the weave and stretches the fabric. Instead, put your garment in the freezer in a plastic bag for 30 to 60 minutes. Once the gum is frozen solid, it becomes brittle and pops off more easily.
If freezing isn't possible, you can use an ice cube in a zip-lock bag pressed directly against the gum for 15 to 20 minutes to achieve the same effect.
Step 2: Remove What You Can
Once frozen, use a dull knife or credit card edge to carefully lift the gum off the fabric. Work from the outside edges inward. For woven fabrics like wool or linen, be especially gentle — the fibers can break or pill if you're too aggressive.
Step 3: Pre-treat the Residue
Even after the bulk of the gum is gone, a sticky, discolored residue often remains. Home remedies that sometimes help:
- Rubbing alcohol or white vinegar — Apply to a clean cloth and dab (don't rub) at the residue. Effective on many synthetic fabrics.
- Peanut butter — The oils in peanut butter can break down gum adhesion on durable fabrics like denim. Use sparingly and wash immediately.
- Commercial adhesive remover — Products like Goo Gone work well, but test on a hidden seam first to check for discoloration.
Caution: Never use any solvent on silk, cashmere, wool, acetate, or dry-clean-only fabrics without professional guidance. Solvents can dissolve dyes or damage delicate weaves permanently.
When to Take It to a Houston Dry Cleaner
Some garments should skip the DIY entirely and go straight to a professional:
- Silk, cashmere, and wool — These require solvent-based cleaning in a controlled environment.
- Structured suits and blazers — Home treatment can distort the shape, lining, or padding.
- Colored or embellished fabrics — Dye-sensitive materials can react unpredictably to solvents.
- Anything labeled Dry Clean Only — Honor that label. The cost of professional cleaning is always less than replacing the garment.
At River Oaks Cleaners, our technicians evaluate every stain individually before applying any treatment. Gum stains on delicate fabrics are a specialty — we see them constantly and know exactly how to handle them without damaging the underlying fabric.
