How to Get Glitter Off Clothes and Out of Fabric in Houston
Glitter has been called the herpes of craft supplies — once it's on something, it's there forever. Whether it landed on your little one's school uniform during an art project, transferred from a sequined dress at a Houston gala, or exploded from a birthday card onto your work blazer, glitter is notoriously stubborn. Here's how to deal with it, and when it's time to call River Oaks Cleaners.
Why Glitter Is Such a Problem
Glitter isn't just annoying because it spreads — it's physically difficult to remove from fabric because each tiny piece has rough edges that catch on fiber strands. Rubbing glitter drives it deeper into the weave rather than lifting it. In Houston's humid climate, glitter that gets damp clings even more aggressively to fabric.
How to Remove Glitter from Machine-Washable Clothing
The key rule: never rub. Every other glitter removal strategy flows from that principle.
- Tap and shake. Take the garment outside and shake it firmly, or tap the area to dislodge loose particles without spreading them.
- Use tape. Packing tape, lint rollers, or wide masking tape pressed firmly against the glitter and peeled away quickly is one of the most effective tools. Repeat multiple times with fresh tape sections.
- Try sticky tack (Blu Tack). For glitter embedded in fabric texture or embroidery, a small ball of adhesive putty pressed and pulled can extract individual particles that tape can't reach.
- Vacuum with nozzle attachment. For larger areas or heavy glitter, a vacuum with a narrow nozzle attachment held close to (but not touching) the fabric surface can suction particles without rubbing them in.
- Spot-treat any remaining color. Some craft glitters use dye that can leave a faint tint behind. A dab of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball, blotted gently, can lift residual color before washing.
- Wash cold. Launder in cold water on a gentle cycle. Hot water can cause glitter adhesive (if the glitter has any) to set into the fiber.
Glitter on Delicate or Dry-Clean-Only Items
Glitter on formal wear, sequined dresses, silk blouses, wool blazers, or any garment labeled Dry Clean Only should come straight to us. These fabrics are easily damaged by home treatments, and glitter removal on structured or embellished garments requires specialized tools and techniques that a professional cleaner has on hand.
This is especially relevant for Houston's gala season, holiday parties, and school events where formal wear meets craft glitter. We see this combination often — and we know how to handle it.
Glitter Transfers from Other Garments
Glitter is notorious for traveling. A sequined evening gown worn in a closet will eventually deposit glitter onto neighboring clothes. If you're storing formal wear with sequins or beading, use individual garment bags to prevent transfer. Our preservation boxes are ideal for long-term storage of heavily embellished pieces.
The Heat-Setting Warning
One critical mistake people make: putting a glitter-covered garment in the dryer before fully removing the particles. High heat can fuse synthetic glitter adhesive to fabric fibers, making removal significantly harder or impossible. Always air-dry or hold off on the dryer until you're satisfied that the glitter is out.
