Dry Cleaning Guide for Houston Country Club Attire: Blazers, Polos, and Golf Clothes

Houston's country club season doesn't slow down in summer — if anything, it intensifies. Golf tournaments, charity luncheons, pool parties, and member dinners mean your club wardrobe is working harder than ever between June and August. And Houston's combination of heat, humidity, and outdoor events creates some of the most demanding conditions for fine clothing anywhere in the country.
For members of River Oaks Country Club, Houston Country Club, Bayou Oaks, or any of Houston's private clubs, looking polished isn't optional — it's part of membership. Here's how to keep your club attire in excellent condition through the summer season.
Blazers and Sport Coats: Handle with Care
A navy blazer or seersucker sport coat is a wardrobe staple for Houston club life, but both suffer in summer heat. Body oil, perspiration, and humidity affect structured garments in ways that aren't always visible right away — but they accumulate and can cause damage over months.
A few principles for blazers at the club:
- Don't wait until you smell something. Perspiration sets into wool and wool-blend blazers even on a mild evening. Have blazers cleaned after every 2-3 wearings during summer, or sooner if you were outdoors.
- Don't hang a blazer that's been in Houston heat and store it. Hanging a damp-from-humidity blazer in a closed closet is how mold and musty odors develop on structured garments. Let it air in a well-ventilated space first.
- Seersucker requires professional cleaning. The distinctive pucker in seersucker fabric is created by tension between two types of yarn. Machine washing — and especially heat from a dryer — can destroy the texture permanently. Dry clean only.
- Linen blazers wrinkle, and that's fine — up to a point. Linen is meant to show some relaxed texture, but a heavily wrinkled linen jacket looks unkempt rather than casually elegant. A professional press between cleanings (without a full wash) can restore the look without over-cleaning the fabric.
Polo Shirts: More Delicate Than They Look
A quality polo from Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, or a custom club logo shirt is a significant investment. Most are machine washable — but there are a few things that get people in trouble:
- Hot water and high heat dry cycles fade colors and shrink fabric. Always wash polo shirts in cold water, gentle cycle, and either air dry or use the lowest heat setting on the dryer. Remove immediately when done to minimize wrinkles.
- Sunscreen is a polo shirt's worst enemy. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide leave white residue on dark fabrics; chemical sunscreens cause yellow staining on light fabrics over time. Apply sunscreen and let it dry before dressing, and treat any sunscreen residue promptly rather than washing over it repeatedly.
- Performance fabric polos (moisture-wicking) need specific care. Synthetic performance fabrics used in golf shirts can trap odors if washed incorrectly. Skip fabric softener (it coats fibers and reduces moisture-wicking), use a sport-specific detergent, and wash inside-out to protect the surface.
- Embroidered club logos require care. Turning shirts inside-out protects embroidery from friction during washing. If embroidery is pulling or distorting, bring it to us — we can assess whether it can be repaired.
Golf Trousers and Shorts
Most modern golf pants are wrinkle-resistant performance fabrics — but "wrinkle-resistant" doesn't mean invincible. A few things to know:
- Grass stains on the knees or hem happen. Grass stains on performance fabric should be treated promptly — don't let them sit. A small amount of dish soap worked gently into the stain before washing can lift grass stains from most synthetics. For wool or dress trousers, bring them in rather than attempting home treatment.
- Club khakis and wool dress trousers are dry clean only. If you're wearing tailored trousers for a member dinner or formal event, dry cleaning preserves the crease, structure, and fabric quality better than any home wash.
- White golf pants show everything. Sunscreen, grass, food, and the natural transfer of color from other garments all show up on white. Have them professionally cleaned after each wearing during active golf season.
Summer Formal and Event Attire
Club events — fundraisers, member galas, awards dinners — often involve cocktail attire or black tie during summer months. A few notes specific to Houston summer events:
- Clean formal attire before storing, even after one wear. Invisible perspiration and body oil will oxidize during storage and show up as yellow discoloration on light-colored gowns or white dress shirts when you retrieve them months later.
- Sequined, beaded, or embellished garments need special handling. These should always go to a dry cleaner — machine washing can cause beads to detach, sequins to melt or tarnish, and embellishments to snag.
- Satin and silk do not forgive Houston humidity. A silk blouse or satin dress worn to a summer event has absorbed perspiration and the ambient moisture of a Houston night. Bring it in promptly — the longer you wait, the harder stains and odors are to remove.
