How to Remove Crayon and Marker Stains from Kids' Clothes in Houston
How to Remove Crayon and Marker Stains from Kids' Clothes in Houston
Houston parents know the drill: summer art projects, back-to-school crafts, and spontaneous marker masterpieces often end up on clothing instead of paper. Crayon wax and marker ink are among the trickiest stains to treat — but with the right approach, many can be reversed at home. Here's what works, what doesn't, and when it's time to call in a professional dry cleaner.
Crayon Stains: Wax + Color = Two Problems
Crayon stains are a dual challenge. The waxy component can be scraped and dissolved, but the pigment embedded in the fabric fibers requires a separate step. Here's a simple home method for washable fabrics:
- Scrape off excess wax. Use a dull knife or credit card to lift any surface wax. Never rub — that drives the crayon deeper into the fiber.
- Apply a petroleum-based pre-treater. WD-40 or a white petroleum jelly rubbed gently into the stain will begin to break down the waxy binder. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Add dish soap and work in gently. A small drop of liquid dish soap (blue Dawn works well) will lift the grease left by the petroleum treatment. Gently work it in with your fingers.
- Rinse in cold water, then launder. Wash the garment in the warmest water safe for the fabric. Check before drying — heat will permanently set any remaining stain.
For delicate fabrics — wool, silk, linen, or structured garments like blazers and uniforms — skip the home treatment entirely and bring the item to a dry cleaner as soon as possible. The petroleum pre-treater can damage certain dyes and finishes.
Washable Markers vs. Permanent Markers
Not all markers are created equal. Washable markers (like Crayola Washable) are designed to release easily from fabric. Cold water and a gentle detergent are usually sufficient. For stubborn residue, a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth, dabbed (not rubbed) on the stain, can lift remaining pigment.
Permanent markers (Sharpies, paint markers) are a different story. Rubbing alcohol is your best home option — apply it to a cotton ball and gently blot the stain from the outside edge inward. Replace the cotton ball frequently so you're lifting ink rather than spreading it. Note that alcohol can affect some dyes, so always test on a hidden seam first.
For permanent marker on dry-clean-only fabrics, bring the item in right away. The sooner a permanent ink stain is treated professionally, the better the outcome.
What About Dry-Erase Markers?
Dry-erase marker ink contains a release agent that makes it easy to wipe off whiteboards — but it doesn't translate to fabric. Treat dry-erase stains like permanent marker: rubbing alcohol, blotting, and cold water rinse. If the stain is on anything other than a basic cotton or polyester garment, err on the side of professional cleaning.
When to Skip Home Treatment
Bring the item straight to River Oaks Cleaners if:
- The fabric is labeled Dry Clean Only
- The garment is structured (blazers, dress shirts, school uniforms with embroidery)
- The marker is permanent and the home treatment isn't working after the first attempt
- The stain has already been through a dryer (heat-set stains are much harder to remove)
- You're not sure what kind of marker it is

A Note on Houston's Summer Heat
Houston's heat and humidity accelerate the setting of any stain. If your child comes home with a crayon or marker stain on their shirt, the clock starts immediately. The longer a stain sits — especially in heat — the harder it becomes to remove. When in doubt, refrigerate the garment (yes, really) to slow oxidation and stain-setting while you decide on a treatment approach.
