How to Remove Cooking Grease and Kitchen Oil Stains from Clothes in Houston
Houston is a food city, and that means cooking accidents happen. Whether it's a splash of bacon grease at Sunday brunch, a drip of Tex-Mex fajita oil, or a brush with a wok at your favorite restaurant, cooking grease and kitchen oil stains are among the most common clothing problems we see at River Oaks Cleaners. They're also among the most mishandled — because the instinct to rinse with water is exactly the wrong move.
Why Cooking Grease Stains Are Particularly Tricky
Oil and water don't mix — which means rinsing a grease stain with water does almost nothing. Worse, if hot water is used, it can partially cook the oil into the fabric, making it harder to remove. And if the garment goes through a dryer before the stain is fully removed, the heat will permanently bond the grease to the fibers. Heat is the enemy of grease stains.
Treating Fresh Cooking Grease Stains at Home
Act quickly — a fresh stain is always easier to remove than a dried one.
- Blot (don't rub) the excess grease immediately. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much oil as possible from the surface. Press and lift; don't rub, which spreads the oil.
- Apply an absorbent powder. Cornstarch, baking soda, or talcum powder poured directly onto the stain will draw out the oil as it sits. Let it rest for 10–15 minutes, then gently brush off.
- Pre-treat with dish soap. Liquid dish soap is specifically formulated to cut grease (that's why it's used on dishes). Apply a small amount directly to the stain and work it in gently with your fingers or a soft brush. Dish soap is safe for most cotton, polyester, and linen fabrics in normal colors.
- Let it sit, then rinse with cold water. Give the dish soap 5–10 minutes to work, then rinse in cold water. Hot water risks setting the stain.
- Check before drying. If the stain is gone, launder as normal. If any trace remains, repeat the pre-treatment before putting the garment in the dryer. Never dryer-dry a stained garment.
Old or Set-In Grease Stains
If the stain has been through a dryer, or sat for more than a few days, the options are narrower. Try this:
- Apply a petroleum-based pre-treatment product (Lestoil, Zout, or even WD-40) directly to the stain. These products are designed to break down oil-based stains that dish soap can't reach after setting.
- Let it soak for 20–30 minutes, then apply dish soap over the top to cut the petroleum.
- Launder in the warmest water the fabric can handle.
- If the stain doesn't lift on the first attempt, don't keep washing — repeated washing can set stains further. Bring it to us.
Grease Stains on Dry-Clean-Only Fabrics
For wool, silk, cashmere, structured jackets, dress pants, or any garment labeled Dry Clean Only — do not attempt home treatment. These fabrics react poorly to water and dish soap, and some are permanently damaged by petroleum-based products. The safest option is to blot off the excess, let the garment air out, and bring it to River Oaks Cleaners as quickly as possible. The fresher the stain, the better the outcome.
Common Kitchen Grease Stain Scenarios in Houston
- BBQ sauce and meat drippings — a combination of oil and sugar that can stain fabric doubly. The sugar caramelizes in heat, so avoid hot water.
- Fajita grease — hot oil from sizzling platters can transfer to lap or sleeves unexpectedly. Treat immediately.
- Cooking spray (PAM) — one of the stealthiest stains. The oil mist is invisible when it lands but shows clearly once heat is applied in the laundry.
- Salad dressing — oil-based dressings (olive oil, vinaigrette) are common offenders at Houston business lunches. Act fast.
