How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Clothing in Houston
The Clock Starts the Moment Wine Hits Your Clothes
Red wine is one of the most common — and most dreaded — fabric emergencies Houston hosts face. Whether it's a dinner party in River Oaks, a summer backyard gathering, or a charity event in the Galleria area, someone always ends up with a stain. The good news: red wine stains are very treatable, especially when handled correctly in the first few minutes.
Here's exactly what to do — and what not to do.
The First 10 Minutes: What to Do Immediately
1. Blot immediately — do not rub. Use a clean white cloth or paper towel to gently blot up as much wine as possible. Work from the outside edge of the stain inward to prevent spreading. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fabric fibers.
2. Dilute with cold water. Pour a small amount of cold water directly on the stain to dilute the remaining wine. Blot again. Repeat. The goal is to pull the stain out of the fabric, not push it in.
3. Apply salt (for dry fabrics only). Generously cover the wet stain with table salt and let it sit for 2–3 minutes. Salt absorbs liquid and draws out pigment before it sets. Brush away gently before it dries to a crust.
Do not use hot water — heat sets protein and tannin stains permanently. Always use cold water on wine.
What Works at Home (and What Doesn't)
Once you've blotted and diluted, there are a few home treatments with reasonable success on fresh stains:
- Club soda: The carbonation helps lift wine pigment. Pour, blot, repeat. Not a guaranteed solution but helpful as a first step.
- Dish soap + hydrogen peroxide mixture: Mix 1 part dish soap with 2 parts hydrogen peroxide. Apply to the stain, let sit 30 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Test first on an inconspicuous area — hydrogen peroxide can bleach dark fabrics.
- Commercial wine stain removers (Wine Away, Carbona Stain Devils): These work well on polyester and cotton blends. Follow the package directions carefully.
What doesn't work and can make things worse:
- White wine on red wine: A persistent myth. White wine dilutes red wine slightly but doesn't remove tannins — and now you have two stains.
- Rubbing aggressively: This spreads the stain and damages fabric fibers, especially silk, wool, and blended fabrics.
- Heat of any kind before the stain is fully out: Dryers, irons, and hot water permanently set stains. Never apply heat until you are certain the stain is completely gone.
When to Take It to the Dry Cleaner
Some fabrics should never be treated at home regardless of the stain:
- Silk, wool, linen, rayon, velvet: These fabrics react poorly to water and home cleaning agents. Water can cause permanent water marks on silk and leave wool feeling stiff or matted.
- Dry clean only garments: The label says that for a reason. Home treatment can damage the fabric or set the stain in ways that make professional removal impossible.
- Set stains (more than 24 hours old): If the wine has dried, professional solvent treatment is your best option. Dried red wine tannins bond with fabric proteins and require targeted enzyme or solvent treatment.
- Dark-colored or patterned fabrics: Hydrogen peroxide and many commercial stain removers will bleach dark colors. A professional cleaner has colorfast treatments that won't damage the fabric.
What We Do Differently
River Oaks Cleaners has treated thousands of wine stains across 35+ years in Houston. Our cleaners identify the fabric type, the age of the stain, and what home treatments were already applied (and how much damage they did) before selecting a treatment approach. Wine stain removal is a process, not a single step — and professional solvents have a dramatically higher success rate on set stains than any home remedy.
Bring your wine-stained garment to any of our Houston locations, or schedule a free pickup. We'll tell you honestly what we can do — and we'll get to work.
