How to Care for Ties and Bow Ties

Quality ties and bow ties are among the most delicate items in a man's wardrobe — they're typically made of silk, which requires careful handling. The good news: with proper daily habits and occasional professional cleaning, a well-made tie can last decades.

Daily Care: Prevention First

Most tie care is preventative rather than corrective. After each wearing:

Untie the knot immediately after wearing: Leaving a tight Windsor or four-in-hand knot in a silk tie overnight compresses the silk fibers and creates a knot crease that becomes permanent over time. Untie completely and allow the tie to relax.

Hang to air: Hang ties on a dedicated tie rack, hanger, or lay flat to air for several hours before storing. This allows the tie to relax from the day's wear and any perspiration or ambient moisture to evaporate.

Roll for travel: When packing, roll ties loosely from the tip rather than folding. Rolling prevents the sharp creases that folding creates.

Spot Treatment for Minor Stains

The most common tie stains are food and beverage — lunch meetings, business dinners, cocktail events. For minor staining:

Wet stains (wine, sauce, water-based): Blot immediately and gently with a clean white cloth. Work from the edge of the stain toward the center to avoid spreading. Do NOT rub — this spreads the stain and disturbs the silk weave.

Oil-based stains (salad dressing, butter): Don't blot with water — this can create water spots on silk. Sprinkle a small amount of cornstarch or talcum powder on the stain immediately to absorb the oil. Leave for 30 minutes, then gently brush off. If residue remains, professional cleaning.

For any stain: do not attempt to wash a silk tie at home. The risk of water spotting, color bleeding, or shrinkage from home washing is too high. Spot treat what you can immediately, then bring to a professional cleaner.

Professional Cleaning for Ties

Silk ties should be professionally dry cleaned when:

• There are stains that spot treatment hasn't resolved
• The tie has accumulated general soiling from regular wear (oil from hands, dust, environmental grime)

Bow Tie Care

Self-tie bow ties require the same silk care as neckties. Pre-tied bow ties on an elastic band are less delicate but should still be stored and handled carefully.

After untying a self-tie bow tie, allow it to relax completely flat before storing. A bow tie left in the tied position compresses the silk and eventually creates permanent fold lines at the knot point.

• Away from direct sunlight (silk dyes are UV-sensitive)
• In a cool, dry environment — not a hot Houston closet if possible
