Table Linen and Tablecloth Cleaning in Houston

From holiday dinners to wedding receptions to everyday family meals, table linens take a beating. Candle wax, red wine, gravy, butter, lipstick — tablecloths and napkins see it all. The question is how to restore them without damaging the fabric or setting the stains permanently.

River Oaks Cleaners has been cleaning Houston's finest household textiles for over 35 years. Here's what you need to know about caring for table linens, and when to bring them to us.

Types of Table Linens and How Each is Cleaned

Cotton and Linen Tablecloths

Most everyday cotton and linen tablecloths can be machine washed in cold water on a gentle cycle. However, for formal or heirloom pieces, professional cleaning is safer — especially if they have embroidery, lace edging, or delicate weaves. Professional pressing on linen produces crisp results that home irons can't match.

Damask and Jacquard

Damask tablecloths — with their woven patterns — require careful handling to preserve the texture and sheen. Professional cleaning followed by hand-pressing preserves the pattern definition that rough machine washing can flatten or distort.

Silk Table Runners and Overlays

Silk should always be professionally dry cleaned. Silk is extremely sensitive to water staining, heat, and agitation. A home washing attempt on silk almost always results in permanent damage.

Polyester and Synthetic Blends

Commercial and rental-grade tablecloths are typically polyester — durable and machine washable. Even these benefit from professional pressing for events where appearance matters.

Common Table Linen Stains and How to Approach Them

Red Wine

Act fast. Blot immediately — don't rub. Salt can help absorb fresh wine before it sets. Rinse with cold water if you're at home, then bring to us as soon as possible. Red wine that has dried and set is significantly harder to remove.

Candle Wax

Let the wax harden completely before attempting removal. Once solid, you can try to flake off the wax with a dull edge. Place the fabric between paper bags or paper towels and iron over it — the heat draws the wax into the paper. Bring to us for the remaining oil stain that wax leaves behind.

Grease and Butter

Apply talcum powder or cornstarch to fresh grease stains to absorb the oil before it sets. Let sit 15-30 minutes, then gently brush away before bringing to us for pre-treatment.

Grass and Outdoor Stains

Common at outdoor events and BBQs. Pre-treat with a stain remover and bring to us promptly. Grass stains contain chlorophyll that can be difficult to remove if allowed to oxidize.

Houston Event Season: When Linens Take the Hardest Hit

Houston's event calendar means table linens work overtime in certain seasons:

  • Wedding season (April-June, October-November): Reception linens need post-event cleaning to restore for reuse or storage
  • Holiday season (November-January): Thanksgiving and Christmas tablecloths see multiple uses in quick succession
  • Outdoor events (March-May, October): Grass, mud, and outdoor stains are common

If you manage a venue, catering operation, or frequently host events, we offer commercial accounts with volume pricing for regular linen cleaning.

Storing Table Linens After Cleaning

Once cleaned and pressed:

  • Store unfolded if possible — rolling large tablecloths around an acid-free tube prevents permanent fold lines
  • Use cotton bags or acid-free boxes — avoid plastic, which traps moisture
  • Store in a cool, dry place — Houston humidity can cause mildew if linens are stored in damp conditions
  • Avoid cedar for fine linens — cedar oils can transfer to fabric over time

Heirloom and Antique Linens

If you have inherited tablecloths, napkins, or linens with sentimental value, please let us know at drop-off. Antique linens may be fragile, yellowed, or have deteriorating fibers that require special handling. We approach these with extra care and will advise you on what restoration is possible.
