How to Prevent and Remove Sweater Pilling

Pilling — those small fiber balls that develop on sweaters after wearing and washing — is one of the most common sweater problems and one that's often misunderstood. The good news: pilling can be reduced with the right care practices, and existing pills can be safely removed.

Why Sweaters Pill

Pilling occurs when loose fibers on the fabric surface tangle together from friction. All woven and knit fabrics with loose fibers can pill — but some fiber types and fabric structures are significantly more prone to it than others:

High-pilling risk: Acrylic, polyester blends, low-grade wool, cotton blends. These fibers are short and break off easily, creating abundant loose fibers that tangle.

Lower-pilling risk: Quality cashmere, fine merino wool, high-grade cotton. Longer, finer fibers hold together better. However, even the finest cashmere will eventually pill under repeated friction — it just takes longer.

Where pilling appears: Areas of highest friction during wearing — underarms, the inside forearms (where arms cross), the torso area under bags or backpacks, and the back of collars.

Prevention: Slowing the Inevitable

Wash gently or by hand: Machine washing creates significant friction that accelerates pilling. For quality sweaters, hand washing or the gentle/delicate cycle with a mesh laundry bag reduces abrasion dramatically.

Turn inside out for machine washing: The inside of the sweater takes the friction in the machine rather than the visible outside surface.

Avoid washing with rough items: Washing fine knits with denim or heavy items creates abrasion between garments. Wash delicate sweaters separately or with other light items.

Air dry: The dryer's tumbling action creates friction that promotes pilling. Air drying laid flat is significantly gentler.

Removing Existing Pills

Pilling that has already developed can be safely removed with a fabric shaver (also called a lint shaver or defuzzer). This is a small electric or battery-powered device with a rotating shaving head that cuts the pills off the surface without damaging the underlying fabric.

How to use a fabric shaver:

  1. Lay the sweater flat on a hard surface
  2. Use gentle, circular motions — don't press hard or drag the shaver in straight lines
  3. Go slowly in heavily pilled areas
  4. Empty the pill trap regularly during the process

After de-pilling, a sweater that looked tired and worn often looks nearly new — the pill removal reveals smooth fabric underneath. This is particularly worthwhile for quality cashmere and wool sweaters before they go back into rotation each fall.

Professional Care

For quality sweaters — cashmere, fine merino, or special-fabric knits — professional dry cleaning is the gentlest care option and extends time between visible pilling development. The professional process avoids the friction of home washing entirely.
