What Creates Jacket Structure

A quality suit jacket has layers of construction that create its shape:

What Damages Jacket Structure

Improper hanging: The most common and most overlooked source of jacket structure damage. Hanging a suit jacket on a narrow wire hanger creates compression points at the shoulders — the hanger's small contact surface transfers all the jacket's weight to two narrow pressure points. Over time, this creates indentations, distortions, and "saddle" damage to the shoulder pad structure that is very difficult to repair.

Always use a properly shaped suit hanger — one with wide, curved shoulders that support the jacket's construction without concentrated pressure points.

Heat during pressing: Excessive heat from an iron directly on jacket fabric can cause the canvas interlining to bubble or separate from the outer fabric in a way that shows through as a bumpy surface. This is most often caused by improper pressing at home — too much direct heat without a pressing cloth.

Hanging while wet: If a jacket gets wet from rain, hanging it to dry is correct — but the jacket should be supported on the proper suit hanger, not allowed to pull at the shoulders while saturated and heavy.

Professional Pressing: Restoring Shape

Professional jacket pressing uses equipment that home ironing cannot replicate — a sleeve board for sleeves, a ham for curved areas, and steam forms that press from inside the jacket rather than compressing from outside. This approach presses the jacket into correct shape rather than just flattening it.

The result is a jacket that looks tailored and structured rather than pressed flat. For clients who've never had a jacket professionally pressed after cleaning, the difference is often striking.

Steam for Between-Cleaning Freshening

Between professional cleanings, a garment steamer held at a distance (not touching) can refresh a jacket's appearance, relax sitting wrinkles, and kill surface odor-causing bacteria. Steam treatment doesn't replace cleaning but extends the interval between cleanings appropriately.

Use a garment steamer rather than a direct iron for between-cleaning at-home care — the gentler approach preserves the jacket's structure better than iron contact.
