Houston Stain Removal Guide: What Your Dry Cleaner Can (and Can't) Remove

After 35 years of professional garment care in Houston, River Oaks Cleaners has seen every stain imaginable — from red wine on white silk to motor oil on dress shirts. Here's our honest guide to what professional dry cleaning can and cannot remove.

The Golden Rule: Act Fast

Time is the enemy of stain removal. The sooner you bring a stained garment to a professional cleaner, the better our chances of complete removal. Most stains that are treated within 24-48 hours can be fully removed; the same stains left for weeks may be permanent. Never try to rub a stain out — this spreads it and drives it deeper into fibers.

Stains We Can Usually Remove

  • Food and beverage — coffee, wine, juice, soda, food spills (fresh)
  • Makeup — foundation, lipstick, mascara, blush on most fabrics
  • Grease and oil — salad dressing, butter, cooking oil (if caught early)
  • Sweat and body oils — underarm yellowing can often be reversed
  • Mud and dirt — once dry, these brush off and clean well
  • Ink — most ballpoint pen ink responds to professional treatment
  • Wax — candle wax is removable with proper technique

Stains That Are More Challenging

  • Old, set stains — any stain that has dried and oxidized over time is harder to remove
  • Red wine on white silk — possible if fresh, but difficult; older stains may not come out completely
  • Rust — metal rust stains require specialized treatment; success varies by fabric
  • Bleach damage — bleach is not a stain; it removes dye permanently. Cannot be reversed.
  • Mold and mildew — depends on how long it's been present and fabric type

Stains That Are Permanent

  • Bleach — removes color from fabric permanently; no cleaning can restore dye
  • Heat-set stains — any stain that has been ironed or put through a hot dryer is set permanently
  • Dye transfer — color that has bled from one garment onto another is difficult to reverse
  • Chemical damage — household chemicals (cleaners, perfume alcohol, etc.) can damage fibers or remove dye

Houston-Specific Stain Challenges

Houston's climate creates some unique stain situations:

  • Perspiration in summer — Houston's brutal heat means heavier sweat. Bring in summer garments promptly to prevent yellowing
  • Sunscreen — SPF products common in Houston can leave oily residue that yellows fabrics over time
  • Red clay soil — common in Houston suburbs; treat mud as a dry stain (let dry, brush off, then bring in)

When in Doubt, Tell Us

Always tell your dry cleaner about any stains — even if you can't see them. Point out the approximate area and what caused the stain. This helps us apply the right pre-treatment before cleaning. A stain we know about has a much higher removal success rate than one we discover during inspection.
