Prom Dress Care Guide for Houston Families
Houston's high school prom season runs from April through May. A prom dress represents a significant investment for most families — and often a significant emotional investment for the student wearing it. Proper care before and after prom ensures the dress looks perfect for the event and is preserved in good condition afterward.
Before Prom: Pre-Event Preparation
Steaming and pressing: Prom dresses that have been stored since purchase or fitting are typically wrinkled. Professional steaming before prom — ideally done 1-2 days before the event, not the morning of — ensures the dress looks its best.
Do not attempt to steam or iron elaborate prom dresses at home. Many prom dresses combine satin, tulle, beading, and sequins — each of these materials responds differently to heat, and household irons can melt synthetic fabric, distort satin, or damage beading. Professional steaming uses the appropriate equipment for each fabric type.
Timing: Schedule pre-prom steaming the week before prom — April and May are busy months for Houston dry cleaners as prom, Easter, graduation, and Mother's Day all compress together. Don't wait until 48 hours before the event.
Prom Night: Protecting the Dress
A few pre-emptive measures can significantly improve prom dress condition by the end of the night:
- Apply body tape or underarm shields to limit perspiration contact with the bodice
- Avoid sitting on or dragging the dress across dirty floors or outdoor surfaces
- For food and drink spills during dinner or after-prom: blot immediately — never rub
- If the dress has a train: be conscious of foot traffic and other couples' heels
After Prom: Immediate Actions
Prom dresses accumulate staining during the event that may not be immediately visible:
- Perspiration in the bodice and underarm areas (particularly significant for spring prom in Houston's warm weather)
- Makeup transfer from hugs, photos, and contact
- Hem and train soil from floors, outdoor photography locations, and parking lots
- Food and beverage from dinner and after-prom events
Bring the prom dress to River Oaks Cleaners within 3-5 days of prom. Stains treated while fresh have dramatically better removal outcomes than those that sit for weeks.
Post-Prom Cleaning and Preservation
Most prom dresses are worn once. After professional cleaning, consider how you want to store the dress:
If you may wear it again (homecoming, formal dance, re-wear to another event): hang in a breathable garment bag after cleaning. Do not store in the plastic dry cleaning bag.
For preservation (sentimental keepsake): After professional cleaning, fold with acid-free tissue and store in an acid-free box in a climate-controlled space. Houston's humidity and heat makes closet storage problematic for long-term preservation without proper materials.
Don't store an uncleaned prom dress: Even if the dress "looks clean" after prom, invisible perspiration and invisible liquid staining oxidizes into yellowing and browning during storage. A dress that looks fine in May can have significant yellowing by the time you retrieve it months or years later.
