New Year's Eve Gown and Holiday Coat Care: Houston Dry Cleaning Guide
December in Houston: Your Formalwear Deserves the Best
December is the month of holiday galas, New Year's Eve parties, and year-end celebrations. Whether you're pulling out a sequined gown for a black-tie event or a structured wool coat for Houston's crisp winter evenings, December demands your wardrobe's best — and your best deserves professional care.
River Oaks Cleaners has been Houston's trusted dry cleaner for 35 years. Here's our December guide to keeping your gowns, coats, and holiday wardrobe in pristine condition.
New Year's Eve Gowns: Special Care for Special Occasions
That stunning New Year's Eve dress represents a significant investment — in money and in memories. Here's how to care for it properly:
Before the Event
If your gown has been in storage since last season, bring it in at least two weeks before the event. We'll inspect for any storage yellowing (common in silks and whites), remove accumulated odors, and professionally press it so it hangs perfectly. Never try to iron a beaded, sequined, or embellished gown at home — heat can melt embellishments and damage delicate fabrics.
After the Event
Even if your gown looks spotless after wearing it, bring it in within a week. Body oils, deodorant, perspiration, and light food/drink contact that's invisible now will oxidize over time and become permanent stains. Professional dry cleaning immediately after wearing is the best investment you can make in a garment you plan to wear again.
Winter Coats: Houston's Seasonal Investment
Houston winters are mild, but December evenings do get cool — and that camel wool coat or down puffer you reach for on cold nights deserves annual professional cleaning.
Wool and Cashmere Coats
Wool and cashmere coats should be professionally dry cleaned once per season. Home washing can cause shrinkage, felting, and distortion of the garment's structure. Dry cleaning maintains the original shape, removes oils that attract moths in storage, and keeps the fabric soft and lustrous year after year.
Down Coats and Puffers
Down coats can often be washed, but improper washing destroys the loft of the down fill. If you're unsure, bring it to us — we'll assess the shell fabric and fill type and recommend the safest cleaning method. A professionally cleaned down coat lasts decades; an improperly washed one loses its warmth in a single cycle.
Faux Fur and Specialty Coats
Faux fur coats, shearling, and specialty outerwear require professional cleaning only. The wrong cleaning method can mat the pile, distort the silhouette, or damage the backing. Trust these pieces to our specialists.
Year-End Storage: Setting Up for Next Season
The end of December is also the time to properly store summer and early fall garments you won't need until spring. A few rules:
- Never store soiled garments — always clean before storing. Stains set permanently and attract moths and silverfish.
- Use breathable garment bags — not plastic. Plastic traps moisture and can cause yellowing and mildew.
- Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets — natural moth deterrents that're safe for fine fabrics.
- Store in a cool, dry, dark place — Houston's humidity is the enemy of stored garments. Avoid attics and garages.
