Ring in the New Year with Clean Clothes: December Dry Cleaning Tips for Houston

December: The Month That Tests Your Wardrobe

December in Houston is a month of celebrations — office holiday parties, Christmas dinners, New Year's Eve galas, and everything in between. It's also the month when garment care tends to get neglected. Between shopping, travel, and entertaining, the dry cleaner can easily fall off the priority list. But a little planning goes a long way toward making sure you look polished for every event and start the new year with a clean closet.

New Year's Eve Outfits: Don't Wait Until the Last Minute

Every year, customers rush in on December 30th hoping to have a gown or tuxedo cleaned in time for New Year's Eve. While we always do our best, December is one of our busiest months, and turnaround times can be longer than usual. If you have a specific outfit planned for December 31st, bring it in by December 26th at the latest. Better yet, send it in during the first two weeks of December so it's pressed and waiting for you when you need it.

Evening gowns — especially those with beading, sequins, heavy embellishment, or delicate fabrics like silk charmeuse, chiffon, or velvet — require extra care and time. Don't leave these to chance.

Holiday Gift Clothing: The "New" Clothes That Still Need Cleaning

Gift clothing presents a common misconception: new means clean. In reality, new garments often carry finishing chemicals, dyes, and residues from the manufacturing and shipping process. Before wearing a newly received wool coat, cashmere sweater, or silk blouse for the first time, it's worth a professional cleaning — especially for sensitive skin or for garments that will contact the face or neck.

Also, be aware that many gift clothing items are labeled "dry clean only." If you receive a luxury item this holiday season, check the care label before doing anything with it, and bring it to us if you're uncertain.

After-Holiday Stain Triage

Holiday dinners mean gravy, cranberry sauce, wine, candle wax drips, and eggnog — all classic stain culprits. If something gets stained during a holiday meal, here's what to do:

  • Blot immediately — don't rub, which spreads the stain and drives it deeper into the fiber.
  • Don't apply home stain removers to dry clean-only fabrics — solvents and hydrogen peroxide can cause dye loss or fabric damage.
  • Point out all stains when you drop off — even ones that seem to have dried out or become invisible. Invisible stains can oxidize and become permanent brown marks if left untreated.
  • Bring it in as soon as possible — the sooner we get it, the better the outcome.

End-of-Year Wardrobe Reset

The week between Christmas and New Year's is the perfect time to do a wardrobe reset. Pull out everything you wore during 2026's fall and holiday season and sort into three piles:

  1. Needs dry cleaning before storage — suits, blazers, formal dresses, wool coats, cashmere
  2. Can be washed at home — machine-washable everyday pieces
  3. Donate or discard — items you didn't reach for all year

Storing clothes without cleaning them first is one of the most common wardrobe mistakes. Body oils, perspiration, and food residues attract moths and other insects during storage and can permanently set as yellow stains on light-colored fabrics. Clean everything you plan to store before boxing it up.

Winter Coats: Mid-Season Check

Houston winters are mild but unpredictable. Your wool overcoat, down coat, or heavy blazer has probably been through a few cold snaps by December. Mid-season is a good time to have coats professionally cleaned — especially if they've been worn in the rain, to restaurant dinners, or to events where perfume and cigarette smoke could have permeated the fabric.

Down and insulated coats can typically be laundered, but structured wool coats, cashmere coats, and any coat with leather or suede trim require dry cleaning. When in doubt, check the care label.
