Why Your Clothes Smell Musty in Houston (And How to Fix It)

You pull a shirt out of your closet, give it a sniff, and it smells... off. Not dirty, not sweaty — just musty. It's a smell Houston residents know well, and it has everything to do with the city's relentless humidity.
Houston regularly sees relative humidity above 80%, and from June through September it rarely drops below 70% even in the middle of the day. That moisture gets into everything — your clothes, your closet, the fabric fibers themselves. Mildew and musty odor are the result.
The frustrating part: this can happen to freshly laundered clothes, dry-cleaned garments, and clothes you never even wore this season. Here's why it happens and what to do about it.
Why Clothes Go Musty in Houston
Slow drying after washing. When you take clothes out of the washing machine and they don't dry quickly enough — either hanging inside without AC or crammed into a pile — mildew can start forming in as little as 8–12 hours. Houston's humidity means air-drying clothes slowly almost guarantees a musty smell.
Closets with poor air circulation. Tightly packed closets trap moisture. If your closet doesn't have good airflow — or if it's against an exterior wall that gets warm — it creates the ideal conditions for mildew growth on fabric.
Putting clothes away damp. In Houston's humidity, even clothes that feel dry to the touch may still hold 10–15% more moisture than they would in a drier climate. Fold and hang them immediately and that residual moisture gets trapped.
Seasonal storage without cleaning. Storing clothes for months without cleaning them first — even if they look clean — is a recipe for musty smells. Invisible perspiration, skin oils, and environmental moisture all combine during storage.
Mildew on closet walls or shelves. Sometimes it's not the clothes at all — mildew growing on a closet wall, shelf, or wooden rod can transfer the smell to everything nearby.
Quick Fixes for Musty Clothes
Depending on the fabric and how bad the smell is, you have several options:
For washable fabrics: Add half a cup of white distilled vinegar to the rinse cycle (not the wash cycle — vinegar neutralizes odor without bleaching). Don't use fabric softener; it traps odors. Dry thoroughly — either in a dryer on medium heat or outdoors on a low-humidity day (rare, but Houston has them). If the smell persists after one wash, rewash immediately rather than putting the item away.
For dry-clean-only garments: Don't try to spot-treat with vinegar or water. Bring it to a professional. Dry cleaners use solvents and deodorizing treatments that eliminate mildew odor without damaging delicate fabrics. At River Oaks Cleaners, we can treat musty odor on wool suits, silk blouses, cashmere sweaters, and any other dry-clean-only item.
For mild cases: Fresh air and sunlight are natural deodorizers. Hang the garment outside on a breezy, drier morning (think November through March in Houston) for a few hours. Don't leave it out long in summer — the humidity works against you.
How to Prevent Musty Clothes in Houston
Prevention is much easier than treatment:
- Dry clothes fast. Use the dryer when possible. If you air-dry indoors, run the AC or a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity under 60%. Never leave wet clothes sitting in the washing machine overnight.
- Don't pack your closet too tightly. Clothes need airflow. If your closet is crammed, rotate seasonal items to off-season storage and leave space between hangers.
- Use moisture absorbers in your closet. DampRid or similar products absorb ambient moisture. Replace them every 30–45 days during Houston summer. Cedar blocks and lavender sachets help with odor but don't actually remove moisture.
- Clean before storing. Anything going into storage for more than a few weeks should be professionally cleaned first. This removes the organic material (sweat, oils, food particles) that mildew feeds on.
- Check your HVAC. A properly functioning central AC dehumidifies your home as it cools. If your home still feels sticky indoors, the AC may be undersized or need service. A dehumidifier in closet areas can supplement it.
- Inspect closet walls and shelving annually. If you notice a musty smell throughout the closet rather than in specific garments, check for mildew on walls, especially corners and the back wall. Treat with a bleach solution (1 tablespoon bleach per quart of water) and ensure the area dries completely before returning clothes.
When to Call a Professional
If the smell doesn't come out after one or two washes, don't keep running the garment through the laundry — repeated washing without success can wear down fabric. Bring it in for professional cleaning with an odor treatment.
If you're pulling clothes out of storage and multiple items smell musty, bring them all in at once. River Oaks Cleaners can process entire wardrobe batches, and we offer free pickup and delivery throughout Houston — so you don't have to haul everything yourself.
With 35 years in Houston, we've seen every humidity-related garment problem there is. Musty clothes are fixable. The key is addressing them before mildew actually damages the fabric fiber — at that point, even professional cleaning may not fully restore the garment.
