Most households use one detergent for everything — which means some items are being cleaned with a product not optimal for them. Understanding which detergent types match which fabric types produces better cleaning results and extends garment life.

Detergent Basics

Laundry detergents work by surrounding and suspending dirt and oil particles in water so they can be rinsed away. The differences between detergent types lie in:

• Surfactant types (the cleaning agents)
• pH level (alkaline vs. neutral)
• Enzyme formulations (which types of stains they target)
• Optical brighteners (UV-reactive chemicals that make fabrics appear whiter)
• Fabric softeners and conditioners (some detergents include these; others don't)

Standard Detergents

Standard detergents (Tide Original, Persil, All) are alkaline pH and contain enzymes targeted at common stains (proteases for protein stains, lipases for fat stains, amylases for starch). They often contain optical brighteners.

Best for: Cotton, polyester, linen, denim, towels, sheets, everyday clothing

Not ideal for: Wool and cashmere (alkaline pH breaks down protein fibers), dark-colored garments (optical brighteners cause gradual color shift), performance synthetic fabrics (some enzyme formulations affect fabric coatings)

Delicate and Specialty Detergents

Woolite Delicate / Soak / similar: Neutral to slightly acidic pH, gentle surfactants, no optical brighteners, no harsh enzymes. Protects protein fibers (wool, cashmere, silk) and delicate fabrics from the alkaline damage standard detergents cause.

Best for: Cashmere, merino wool, silk, lace, lingerie, embellished garments

Dark Clothing Detergents

Woolite Dark, Perwoll Black, and similar dark-specific detergents are formulated at lower alkalinity and without optical brighteners — the key factor in preserving dark clothing's color over repeated washes.

Best for: Black denim, dark navy and charcoal clothing, any dark-colored garment where color retention matters

Performance / Technical Fabric Detergents

Nikwax Tech Wash, Grangers Performance Wash, and similar technical fabric detergents are specifically formulated for synthetic performance fabrics — cleaning without the fabric softeners and additives that clog synthetic fibers' wicking structures and impair DWR water repellency.

Best for: Athletic wear, running clothes, technical outerwear, rain jackets

Hypoallergenic Detergents

Unscented, dye-free formulations (All Free & Clear, Seventh Generation Free & Clear) are appropriate for people with skin sensitivities. Also appropriate for infant clothing.

What to Avoid

Fabric softeners with wool and cashmere: Softener coat fibers in a way that actually reduces wool's natural softness over time. Never use fabric softener on wool or cashmere.

Fabric softeners with athletic wear: Softener clogs performance fabric wicking structures. Avoid with any moisture-management or technical fabric.

Optical brighteners with darks: Any detergent with optical brighteners will gradually shift dark fabric color. Read labels and avoid these for dark clothing.
