New Year Wardrobe Refresh Houston 2030 — Post-Holiday Dry Cleaning Guide
New Year Wardrobe Refresh Houston 2030 — Post-Holiday Dry Cleaning Guide
The holidays are over, the family gatherings are done, and your closet is full of garments that worked hard this season. January is the perfect time to assess what needs professional care before you store it away — and to start 2030 with a wardrobe that is clean, organized, and ready for whatever the year brings.
At River Oaks Cleaners, we have been caring for Houston families's wardrobes for 35 years. Here is our January dry cleaning checklist to help you start the new year right.
Garments That Must Be Cleaned Before Storage
The most important rule in garment care: never store a dirty garment. Oils, perfume, food residue, and body sweat are invisible after the holidays but become permanent stains over months of storage. They also attract moths and silverfish.
These items from your holiday season should go to the dry cleaner before being stored:
- Holiday dresses and formal gowns — even if they look clean, champagne and candle smoke are on them
- Wool and cashmere blazers — food aromas and body oils settle into natural fibers
- Heavy winter coats — clean before storing for spring to avoid set-in stains by fall
- Velvet and silk pieces — these require professional cleaning; do not attempt at home
- Tablecloths and cloth napkins — gravy, wine, and wax stains are easier to remove now than in six months
Winter Fabrics That Deserve Extra Attention in January
Houston winters are mild, but January still brings enough cool weather to justify proper wool and cashmere care.
Cashmere sweaters benefit enormously from professional cleaning after a full season of wear. Body oils stretch the fibers over time, and professional dry cleaning restores both softness and shape. At home, even gentle hand-washing can cause felting or shrinkage.
Down coats and puffer jackets need annual cleaning to redistribute fill, remove body oils, and maintain loft. A flat, limp puffer is usually just dirty — professional cleaning and proper re-drying can restore it significantly.
Structured wool blazers and sport coats should be cleaned once per season, not just pressed. Dry cleaning removes the oils that break down wool fibers and keeps the garment looking tailored rather than tired.
The January Closet Reset
While your winter items are at the cleaner, take the opportunity to reorganize your closet. Move summer items that have been pushed aside back to a visible location. Donate or discard anything you did not wear this past year. When your cleaned garments return, hang them in breathable garment bags or on good wooden hangers — wire hangers distort shoulders over time.
Houston's humidity means mold and mildew are year-round concerns, even in January. Cedar blocks or sachets in your closet help absorb moisture and deter moths. Avoid plastic garment bags for long-term storage; the plastic traps humidity against fabric.
