Care Labels: The User Manual for Your Clothes
Every piece of clothing sold in the United States is required by the FTC Care Labeling Rule to include care instructions. Those small tags sewn into seams or waistbands contain the most important information for maintaining your garment correctly. Yet most people find the symbols confusing and either ignore them or guess — often resulting in ruined garments.
At River Oaks Cleaners, we've been educating Houston clients about care labels since 1989. Here's a complete guide to reading and following them correctly.
The Five Basic Care Symbol Categories
Care labels use symbols from five categories, each representing a different type of treatment. The symbols are standardized internationally (with some variation) and appear in combination to give complete care instructions.
1. Washing Symbols (Tub with Water)
A tub/basin symbol indicates the garment can be machine or hand washed. Modifications within and around the symbol indicate specifics:
- Plain tub: Machine wash in any temperature
- Tub with number (30, 40, 60): Maximum wash temperature in Celsius. 30°C = cold/delicate; 40°C = warm; 60°C = hot.
- Tub with one underline: Permanent press/gentle cycle
- Tub with two underlines: Delicate/gentle cycle with reduced agitation
- Tub with hand: Hand wash only
- Tub with X through it: Do not wash in water at all
2. Bleaching Symbols (Triangle)
- Plain triangle: Any bleach may be used when needed
- Triangle with diagonal lines: Only non-chlorine (oxygen) bleach when needed
- Triangle with X: Do not bleach
3. Drying Symbols (Square)
A square indicates tumble or line drying instructions:
- Square with circle inside: Tumble dry
- Square with circle and one dot: Tumble dry on low heat
- Square with circle and two dots: Tumble dry on medium heat
- Square with circle and three dots: Tumble dry on high heat
- Square with X through circle: Do not tumble dry
- Square with horizontal line: Dry flat (important for knits that would stretch if hung)
- Square with curved line at top: Line dry
- Square with three vertical lines: Drip dry
4. Ironing Symbols (Iron Shape)
- Iron with one dot: Iron on low heat (synthetics)
- Iron with two dots: Iron on medium heat (wool, silk)
- Iron with three dots: Iron on high heat (cotton, linen)
- Iron with X: Do not iron
- Iron with X through steam lines: Do not steam
5. Dry Cleaning Symbols (Circle)
- Plain circle: Dry clean
- Circle with letter A: Any solvent may be used
- Circle with letter P: Dry clean with specific solvents (perchloroethylene and others). Most professional cleaners use P-listed solvents.
- Circle with letter F: Dry clean with petroleum solvent only
- Circle with W: Wet clean only (professional process)
- Circle with X: Do not dry clean
- Circle with underline: Dry cleaning is recommended but gentle home washing may also be acceptable
Reading a Complete Care Label
A complete care label might show: a tub with 30 and one underline (machine wash on gentle in cold water), a triangle with diagonal lines (oxygen bleach only), a square with circle and one dot (tumble dry low), and an iron with two dots (medium iron). Reading all symbols together gives you the complete care protocol for that garment.
