How Often Should You Dry Clean Your Suits?

One of the most common questions we hear at River Oaks Cleaners is: how often should I take my suits to the dry cleaner? The answer depends on how frequently you wear them, the fabric, and what you put your suit through.

Dry cleaning too often wears down fabric over time. But waiting too long means sweat, oils, and odors build up and become difficult or impossible to remove.

The General Rule: Every 3–4 Wears

For most business suits worn regularly, we recommend dry cleaning after every 3 to 4 wears — roughly once a month for someone who wears a suit twice a week. Between cleanings, keep your suit fresh by hanging it on a proper wooden suit hanger, letting it air out overnight, brushing off surface dust, and steaming lightly to remove wrinkles.

When to Dry Clean Right Away

Bring your suit in immediately if you notice a visible stain of any kind, body odor that doesn't air out overnight, heavy perspiration, or before seasonal storage. Never store a soiled suit — stains set permanently and pests are attracted to body oils.

Fabric Matters

Wool suits handle cleaning every 3–4 wears without issue. Linen suits may need more frequent cleaning because linen shows sweat and wrinkles easily — after each warm-weather outing is reasonable. Silk-blend suits are more delicate; aim for 4–5 wears. Seersucker, popular for Houston summers, should be cleaned at the start and end of the season at minimum.

The Houston Factor

Houston's humidity and heat are brutal on formal wear. If you wore a suit outside in July or August, you're probably sweating through it even if it doesn't look it. Houston professionals typically need dry cleaning more frequently than those in cooler climates — after 2–3 wears in summer rather than 4.

Don't Forget the Pants

Suit pants take more abuse than the jacket. Many customers bring pants in more frequently, which is perfectly fine — cleaning jacket and pants on separate intervals is a common and cost-effective approach.
