Houston Rodeo Western Wear Care Guide

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of the largest in the world, and Houston's rodeo season brings western wear out across the city for three weeks each February-March. Whether you're wearing western attire to the Rodeo itself, a Rodeo-themed event, or just participating in Houston's annual western enthusiast moment, here's how to care for the key pieces.

Western Shirts

Traditional western shirts in cotton or cotton-blend are typically machine washable. Key care notes:

• Snap closures: Snap the snaps before washing to prevent the male snap from catching on fabric inside the machine. Check that the snaps are still firmly attached after washing.
• Embroidery: Heavily embroidered western shirts benefit from turning inside out before washing to protect the embroidery thread from friction against the machine drum.
• Pearl snaps: Pearl-look snaps can sometimes crack in hot dryers. Line dry or tumble dry low.
• Fringe: Garments with leather or fabric fringe should generally be hand-washed or dry cleaned — fringe tangles and gets damaged in a machine washer.

Cowboy Hats

Cowboy hat care depends on the material:

Felt cowboy hats (standard for cooler rodeo weather):

• Never get felt hats wet — water causes shrinkage and warping
• Dust with a soft lint brush or felt brush, brushing counterclockwise (this follows the natural lay of felt fibers)
• Store upside down (crown down, brim up) on a clean surface — never store brim-down as this crushes the brim
• Professional hat cleaning and blocking available from specialty hat shops

Straw hats (popular for outdoor Rodeo events):

• Wipe with a clean, barely damp cloth for surface dirt
• Avoid soaking straw — it causes the hat to lose its shape
• Store with care to avoid crushing the brim

Western Boots

Quality cowboy boots are typically made of full-grain leather, exotic leather (ostrich, alligator, caiman, snake), or synthetic materials. Care by type:

Standard leather boots:

• Clean with leather cleaner or a slightly damp cloth
• Condition regularly to keep leather supple — especially important after Houston rain exposure
• Polish with boot wax or cream appropriate for the leather's finish
• Cedar boot trees or newspaper stuffing maintains boot shape in storage

Exotic leather boots (ostrich, alligator):

• These require specialty conditioners appropriate for exotic leather
• Professional cleaning and conditioning is recommended for high-value exotic boots
• Never use standard shoe polish — the formulation can damage exotic hides

Denim for Rodeo Season

Rodeo-appropriate denim (Wrangler and similar western-cut styles) is durable and straightforward to care for. The key: wash inside out in cold water to preserve the dark indigo wash that's characteristic of western denim. The fades and wear patterns in good Wranglers are part of their authenticity — excessive washing or hot water treatment removes this character.

Post-Rodeo Season Care

After Houston's Rodeo season closes in March, western pieces going back into storage for 11 months benefit from professional cleaning before storage — perspiration and smoke from outdoor Rodeo events doesn't improve in a closet. Clean boots, condition leather, brush hats, and wash or dry clean shirts before they go away until next year.
