Gown Cleaning in Houston: Formal, Evening, and Ballgown Care

Houston is a gown city. With a year-round gala calendar, a thriving wedding scene, the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet, debutante balls, charity events, and one of the country's most active philanthropy cultures, Houston women wear gowns — and gowns require expert care.

River Oaks Cleaners has been Houston's trusted gown specialist since 1989. Whether you need an evening gown cleaned after a charity dinner, a ballgown freshened for another season, or a one-of-a-kind couture piece preserved after a milestone event, we have the experience to handle it.

Types of Gowns We Clean

Evening Gowns and Cocktail Dresses

Evening gowns — floor-length formal dresses worn to galas, operas, charity events, and formal dinners — come in a wide range of fabrics: silk charmeuse, chiffon, velvet, satin, crepe, jersey, and structured taffeta. Each fabric requires different handling. Silk charmeuse, for example, is highly susceptible to water spotting and requires careful dry cleaning, while jersey can usually be wet-cleaned. We assess each gown before cleaning and select the appropriate method.

Ballgowns

Ballgowns — the full, structured dresses worn to debutante balls, cotillions, and black-tie galas — often feature layers of tulle or organza, boning, structured bodices, and significant embellishment. These are complex garments that require dismantling in some cases to properly clean each component. We've been caring for Houston debutante and cotillion gowns for generations.

Formal Prom and Homecoming Gowns

Prom and homecoming gowns often feature sequins, beading, rhinestone embellishments, and delicate fabrics that can't be machine washed. After a night of dancing and Houston's summer heat, professional cleaning is essential to preserve the garment — whether for resale, preservation, or passing down.

Opera and Performance Gowns

Houston is home to the Houston Grand Opera and a thriving performing arts scene. Performance gowns worn multiple times under stage lighting and with theatrical makeup require skilled cleaning to address the specific soiling patterns of performance use.

What Makes Gown Cleaning Different

Gowns present unique challenges that standard dry cleaning isn't designed to handle:

  • Size and volume: Full ballgowns may require specialized equipment to clean and press without flattening tulle layers or crushing embellishments.
  • Embellishments: Beading, sequins, and rhinestones may be glued rather than sewn. Some adhesives are solvent-sensitive and can dissolve or yellow in standard dry cleaning. We test embellishments before proceeding.
  • Invisible stains: Champagne, white wine, and clear spirits leave no visible stain when they dry — but they oxidize over time and turn brown. Gowns stored without proper cleaning after an event can develop mystery staining months later. Clean your gown promptly after wearing.
  • Structured components: Boning, corset-style bodices, and built-in bras require careful handling to maintain their shape and support.

After the Event: Timing Matters

The most common mistake with gowns is delaying cleaning. An evening gown worn to a gala may look perfect when you hang it up — but body oils, perspiration, perfume, champagne, and food residue are already beginning to oxidize. Within weeks, these invisible deposits can cause yellowing, weakening of fabric fibers, and permanent staining.

Bring your gown in within a week of wearing it, or as soon as possible. Let us know what the gown was exposed to — we'll treat it accordingly.
