Houston Rodeo & Valentine's Day 2030 — Caring for Western Wear and Formal Attire
Houston Rodeo & Valentine's Day 2030 — Caring for Western Wear and Formal Attire
February is one of Houston's most eventful months. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo draws millions of visitors to NRG Park, Valentine's Day calls for romantic dinners and formal attire, and Mardi Gras celebrations round out a calendar packed with opportunities to dress up — and then need dry cleaning.
River Oaks Cleaners has been serving Houstonians through every rodeo season for 35 years. Here is what to know about caring for your February wardrobe.
Western Wear After the Rodeo
Western wear is built for the outdoors but that does not mean it is maintenance-free. After a day or night at the Houston Rodeo, here is what needs attention:
- Denim jackets and jeans — rodeo venues have a lot of dust, food, and crowd wear. Most quality denim benefits from occasional professional cleaning to preserve structure and color.
- Western dress shirts — cotton and cotton-blend snap shirts can be laundered, but embroidered or embellished versions need professional care to prevent damage to the detailing.
- Cowboy hats (felt) — felt western hats should be professionally cleaned and blocked after heavy wear. Sweat and Houston humidity distort the brim over time.
- Leather boots — while we do not clean boots, we recommend conditioning leather footwear after heavy outdoor events to prevent cracking.
- Fringe and beaded western jackets — these are dry-clean only without exception. The fringe and embellishments are attached with specific methods that water and agitation will destroy.
Valentine's Day Formalwear Care
Romantic dinners mean formal or semi-formal attire, candlelight, wine, and often some combination of food and beverage meeting expensive fabric.
Common Valentine's Day stain challenges we see every year:
- Red wine on silk blouses — do not blot with club soda at the table. Blot gently with a clean dry cloth and bring it to us immediately after the evening.
- Candle wax on velvet — never pick at wax. Let it harden completely, then bring the garment in. We use solvents to remove wax without damaging pile.
- Chocolate on formal dresses — chocolate contains both fats and pigments, which is why home stain removers rarely fully work. Professional treatment addresses both components.
- Perfume on light-colored fabrics — perfume leaves invisible residue that oxidizes yellow over months. Clean the garment before storing it.
Sequins and Beaded Tops
February events often call for sparkle. Sequined and beaded tops are among the most common items we see after Valentine's and Mardi Gras events. These garments are almost always dry-clean only — the thread holding beads and sequins will weaken in water, and individual ornaments will fall off. We use low-agitation professional methods to clean these safely.
