First Time Using a Dry Cleaner? Here's What to Expect
If you've never used a professional dry cleaner, the process can feel mysterious. What do you bring? What do you say? How do you know what needs dry cleaning vs. what can be washed at home? This guide answers the most common first-time questions we get from new River Oaks Cleaners customers.
What Actually Needs Dry Cleaning?
Not everything needs professional dry cleaning. But these categories almost always do:
- Anything labeled "dry clean only" — the care label is your guide and your legal disclaimer. Home washing items marked dry clean only risks permanent damage.
- Structured garments: Suit jackets, blazers, structured dress jackets — the internal construction (interfacing, shoulder padding, shaping) that gives these garments their form will distort with water washing
- Silk — most silk garments (blouses, dresses, scarves) require dry cleaning to prevent shrinkage and fiber damage
- Wool — structured wool garments almost always require dry cleaning; knit wool can sometimes be gently hand washed
- Formal and occasion wear — wedding dresses, formal gowns, cocktail dresses — both for safe cleaning and professional pressing
- Heavily stained garments — professional pre-spotting and solvent treatment removes stains that home washing can't
What to Do Before You Bring Garments In
- Empty all pockets. Check every pocket — we do too, but customers are responsible for any items left in pockets.
- Note any stains and tell us about them. The more you tell us about what caused a stain and how long it's been there, the better we can treat it. Point out stains at the counter — don't assume we'll find them.
- Tell us about any previous home treatment. If you've already tried to treat a stain at home, tell us — this affects what we can do professionally.
- Note any concerns about color, embellishments, or special care. If you're worried about a piece, say so. We'd rather know your concerns upfront than have you disappointed later.
What to Expect at Drop-Off
When you bring garments to River Oaks Cleaners:
- We'll inspect each garment with you, noting the care label, any existing staining or damage, and your specific instructions
- We'll write up a ticket noting each item, any special requests, and the expected return date
- You'll get a claim ticket — keep it for pickup
- Turnaround is typically 1-2 business days for standard items, same-day for rush service when available
What Dry Cleaning Actually Does
"Dry cleaning" isn't actually dry — it uses liquid solvents (rather than water) to dissolve and remove soil. The garment is placed in a large machine that tumbles it in solvent, then spun and dried. The solvent is then distilled and recycled. After cleaning, garments are pressed by hand using steam and pressing equipment shaped to the garment type.
This process is gentler on structured garments and delicate fabrics than water washing because the solvent doesn't cause the fiber swelling and shrinkage that water does.
Common First-Timer Questions
"Do I need to wash it before bringing it in?"
No — bring it as-is. Home pre-washing before dry cleaning often makes stain treatment harder, not easier.
"How do I know if my item can be cleaned?"
Bring it in and show us. We can usually tell from the care label, fabric content, and construction what's achievable. We'll tell you upfront if there are concerns.
"What if I'm not happy with the result?"
Tell us. We stand behind our work. If a stain didn't come out completely, bring it back and we'll re-treat it.
