Does Dry Cleaning Shrink Clothes? What You Need to Know

It is a common question, and it makes sense to ask: if you are trusting a dry cleaner with your favorite suit or a delicate blouse, you want to know it will come back the same size it left. The short answer is that professional dry cleaning, when done correctly, should not shrink your clothes. In fact, that is one of the primary reasons dry cleaning exists.

Why Clothes Shrink in the First Place

Fabric shrinkage happens when fibers absorb water and heat. Most natural fibers — wool, cashmere, cotton, silk, and linen — are woven under tension during manufacturing. When they get wet and then heated (in a washing machine or dryer), those fibers relax and contract, causing the garment to shrink. Delicate fabrics like silk can also distort, pucker, or lose their shape from water exposure alone.

Synthetic fibers like polyester are generally more shrink-resistant, but even they can be damaged by high heat in a dryer.

How Dry Cleaning Avoids Shrinkage

Dry cleaning uses a liquid solvent — most commonly perchloroethylene or newer alternatives like PERC alternatives and hydrocarbon solvents — rather than water to clean garments. Because the solvent does not penetrate fibers the way water does, the fibers do not swell or relax. This means the fabric maintains its original woven structure, and shrinkage does not occur.

Professional pressing after cleaning uses controlled steam and pressure to smooth fabric and restore its original shape — rather than the uncontrolled heat of a home dryer that causes shrinkage.

When Can Dry Cleaning Cause Problems?

Dry cleaning done improperly can cause issues, including:

  • Incorrect solvent for the fabric — Some specialty fabrics require specific solvents. Using the wrong one can cause color loss or texture change.
  • Over-cleaning — Running delicate items through the cleaning process too many times without inspection can degrade fibers.
  • Improper finishing — Pressing too aggressively with too much heat can scorch or distort some fabrics.
  • Pre-existing damage — Garments that are already weakened or degraded may not survive the cleaning process well.

A reputable dry cleaner inspects each garment before cleaning and flags any issues. At River Oaks Cleaners, we examine every item we receive and discuss any concerns with customers before proceeding.

The Fabrics That Should Always Be Dry Cleaned

Certain fabrics should never be washed at home because of shrinkage and other risks:

  • Wool suits and blazers — Machine washing will shrink, felt, and distort wool
  • Silk — Water stains silk and can cause irreversible texture changes
  • Cashmere — Shrinks significantly when wet; hand washing is possible but risky
  • Velvet — Water crushes the pile permanently
  • Structured garments — Blazers and tailored pieces have internal structure (canvas, interfacing, padding) that is destroyed by machine washing
  • Linen — Wrinkles severely when washed and is difficult to press back to original shape at home

What About Garments Labeled “Dry Clean Only”?

The “dry clean only” label is the manufacturer’s recommendation for safe cleaning. It does not always mean the garment will be destroyed if washed, but it does mean the manufacturer tested the garment in professional dry cleaning conditions and cannot guarantee results from home washing. In most cases, “dry clean only” means the fabric or construction is likely to shrink, distort, or be damaged by water and heat.

If you are unsure whether a garment can be safely home-washed, err on the side of caution. The cost of professional dry cleaning is far less than replacing a damaged garment.
