Coat and Jacket Cleaning Guide for Houston Weather

Houston's mild winters mean heavy coats see limited use — but that doesn't mean they require less care. Coats worn infrequently through December-February still accumulate significant wear, and improper storage of an uncleaned coat accelerates deterioration. Here's the care guide for each type.

Houston's Coat Reality

In Houston, a heavy winter coat might be worn 20-30 times in a season rather than the daily 150+ wearings it might see in Chicago. The care needs are different:

• Less frequent wearing = potentially longer intervals between cleaning
• But winter coats are worn through Houston's rain season and often to outdoor events where staining occurs
• Houston's humidity during summer storage months means an unwashed coat sits with absorbed perspiration and soil for 8-9 months

The rule: clean coats before storage in spring, and retrieve and inspect before the first cold spell in fall.

Wool and Wool-Blend Overcoats

Houston's "dress coat" — a wool or wool-blend overcoat for formal winter events — requires professional dry cleaning. Home washing wool causes felting (irreversible fiber compaction that turns the fabric stiff and smaller). The interlining and structure of a wool overcoat is also best handled by professional equipment.

Frequency: once per season, at end of season before storage. If the coat was worn through rain events or to smoke-filled environments, clean sooner.

Trench Coats and Rain Coats

Classic cotton twill trench coats (Burberry and similar) are dry-clean-only — the water-resistant treatment on cotton twill is sensitive to washing. Check your trench coat's care label; most specify dry clean only.

Modern waterproof rain coats and shell jackets (Patagonia, Arc'teryx, North Face) should be washed per manufacturer instructions — usually machine wash on gentle with technical fabric cleaner (not standard detergent). See our separate post on outdoor gear cleaning for DWR treatment details.

Down Puffer and Parka

Houston's down jackets and parkas can typically be machine washed according to the care label — but the drying is the tricky part. Down fill needs to dry completely to prevent mildew and odor; under-dried down stays clumped and loses loft. Tumble dry low heat with 2-3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps. Dry for 2-3 cycles, checking regularly. The jacket should feel fully loft-restored when done.

Leather Jackets

Leather jackets should be professionally dry cleaned by a cleaner with leather expertise. Standard dry cleaning solvent can dry out leather — the right approach includes leather conditioning after cleaning. End-of-Season Care

Before putting any coat away for Houston's long non-winter season:

1. Clean professionally or wash per the care label
2. Inspect for any repairs needed (loose buttons, damaged zipper, torn pocket lining)
3. Store in a breathable garment bag, not plastic
4. Climate-controlled storage — not attic or garage
