Chlorine Damage to Clothing: What to Do After Pool Season in Houston
Chlorine Damage to Clothing: What to Do After Pool Season in Houston
Houston pool season is essentially March through November — one of the longest in the country. If you or your family spend significant time in pools, chlorine damage to clothing and swimwear is an inevitable part of life.
Here is what chlorine does to different fabrics, how to minimize the damage, and when professional cleaning can help.
How Chlorine Damages Fabric
Chlorine is a powerful oxidizing agent designed to break down organic matter — bacteria, algae, and other pool contaminants. Unfortunately, it also breaks down fabric fibers over time.
- Color fading: Chlorine bleaches dyes out of fabric. The first sign is usually color fading — especially on dark swimwear, black fabric, and brightly colored clothing.
- Fabric weakening: Extended chlorine exposure weakens synthetic fibers (spandex, nylon, polyester) and natural fibers (cotton, linen) alike. The result is thinning, pilling, or holes in heavily exposed areas.
- Texture change: Spandex loses elasticity after repeated chlorine exposure. Swimwear stops holding its shape and begins to sag.
- White discoloration: On dark clothing, chlorine bleaching can leave irregular white or light-colored patches that are permanent.
Emergency Steps After Chlorine Exposure
If clothing or swimwear was accidentally exposed to pool water or splash-back from chlorine chemicals, act quickly:
- Rinse the item immediately in cool fresh water to dilute and flush out the chlorine.
- Do not wring or twist — gently press water through the fabric.
- Soak in a solution of 1 tablespoon white vinegar per gallon of cold water for 15 minutes. Vinegar neutralizes residual chlorine.
- Rinse again in fresh water and press dry with a towel.
- Air dry away from direct sunlight (UV + residual chlorine is especially damaging to color).
This process works best immediately after exposure. Color fading that has already occurred cannot be reversed at home.
Caring for Swimwear Long-Term
Swimwear takes the most chlorine abuse. To extend the life of good swimwear:
- Rinse immediately after every pool session — even if you plan to swim again later that day
- Hand wash in cool water with a gentle soap or swimwear-specific detergent; avoid the washing machine
- Never put swimwear in the dryer — heat accelerates chlorine-induced breakdown
- Dry flat in the shade, not in direct Houston sun
- Rotate between two or more swimsuits if you swim daily — fabric recovers better with a rest day
- Avoid sitting on rough concrete pool decks in swimwear, which accelerates fiber pilling
Chlorine on Regular Clothing
Pool splash and water park trips commonly get chlorine on regular clothing — cover-ups, shorts, t-shirts, and even towels. For cotton and polyester clothing:
- Rinse immediately and launder with a mild detergent in cool water
- Check for discoloration before drying — if you see color changes, do not put the item in the dryer; heat sets the damage
- For items with partial bleach spots, a fabric dye product can sometimes restore even color — but this is an imperfect fix
Linen and silk are particularly vulnerable to chlorine. If these fabrics got pool exposure, skip the home treatment and bring them to a dry cleaner as soon as possible.
What a Dry Cleaner Can and Cannot Fix
It is important to be honest about what is possible:
Professional cleaning can help with:
- Removing chlorine odor from garments
- Treating early-stage chlorine exposure before staining fully sets
- Restoring structure to lightly damaged fabric through professional finishing
- Cleaning delicate swimwear and cover-ups that should not be machine washed
Professional cleaning cannot fix:
- Permanent color loss from chlorine bleaching — once the dye is gone, it is gone
- Structural fiber damage (thinning, holes) caused by long-term chlorine exposure
- Loss of elasticity in swimwear spandex
If you bring in a chlorine-damaged garment, our team will assess it honestly and let you know before proceeding what is and is not achievable.
