The Houston Guide to Cashmere and Wool Care

Fall and winter bring cashmere sweaters, wool blazers, and merino turtlenecks out of storage across Houston. These natural fiber garments are among the most luxurious and long-lasting in your wardrobe, but only when cared for properly. At River Oaks Cleaners, we have over 35 years of experience caring for Houston's finest garments.

Why Cashmere Needs Special Handling

Cashmere fibers are extraordinarily fine, which is what makes them so soft. Machine washing causes fibers to mat and felt permanently. Heat causes irreversible shrinkage. Harsh detergents strip the natural oils that give cashmere its softness. Improper storage invites moth damage.

Dealing with Pilling

Pilling is a natural occurrence with cashmere and wool, resulting from friction loosening shorter fibers. Use a cashmere comb or fabric shaver to gently remove pills. Never pull them off with your fingers, as this damages the underlying fabric.

Proper Storage Between Wearings

Cashmere and wool should be folded, not hung. Hanging heavy knits causes them to stretch and lose their shape. Cedar blocks or lavender sachets in your drawer naturally deter moths without chemical smell.

When to Dry Clean

We recommend professional dry cleaning for cashmere and wool at the end of each season before storage, after any significant soiling, for structured wool blazers after every 3 to 4 wearings, and after heavy perspiration which degrades wool fibers if left untreated.

Houston Humidity Considerations

Never store wool or cashmere in plastic bags; they trap moisture and create ideal conditions for mildew. Use breathable cotton garment bags instead. Bring your pieces to any of our 9 Houston locations or use our free pickup and delivery.
