Houston's August Heat and Your Wardrobe: How to Fight Sweat Stains and Fabric Damage
August in Houston is relentless. Temperatures routinely push past 100°F, humidity clings to everything, and by the time you walk from your car to the front door, you've already broken a sweat. For your wardrobe, this is the most punishing month of the year — and the one most people handle wrong.
At River Oaks Cleaners, we've spent 35 years caring for Houston wardrobes through every August. Here's what we've learned about protecting your clothes during peak heat season.
Why August Is the Hardest Month for Your Clothes
Sweat is more damaging than most people realize. The salt, oils, and proteins in perspiration don't just stain — they weaken fabric fibers over time. Light-colored shirts develop that familiar yellowish ring under the arms. Dress shirts lose their crispness. Linen and silk can develop a permanent musty odor if sweat isn't properly removed before storage.
The problem is compounded by Houston's humidity. In a dry climate, sweat evaporates quickly. In Houston, it lingers — creating conditions where bacteria and mold can begin breaking down fabric before you even get home to change.
The Right Way to Handle Sweaty Summer Clothes
Don't let them sit. The biggest mistake Houstonians make is throwing sweaty clothes in a pile for "later." Every hour fabric sits with sweat worked into it, the harder stains become to remove. Get garments to the hamper or the dry cleaner as quickly as possible.
Know what needs dry cleaning vs. machine washing. Cotton polos, athletic wear, and casual summer shirts can generally go in the washer on a cool cycle. But dress shirts with significant perspiration buildup, silk blouses, linen blazers, and any structured garment should go to a professional cleaner. Aggressive machine washing can destroy the construction of tailored pieces even when stains wash out.
Treat visible stains before they set. For washable fabrics, a pre-treatment with white vinegar or an enzyme-based detergent applied immediately can prevent staining from setting. Do not use hot water — heat bonds proteins to fabric. For dry-clean-only pieces, don't apply anything at home. Bring them in and let us know where the stain is and what caused it.
August-Specific Problem: The Armhole Stain
The yellow-orange discoloration that appears under the arms of dress shirts is one of the most common things we see in August and September. Many people assume it's a laundry problem — that their washer isn't powerful enough. In reality, it's usually a combination of sweat proteins and the aluminum compounds in antiperspirant deodorant reacting with fabric under heat.
At-home solutions often make this worse by setting the stain with heat from the dryer. If you have shirts with early-stage underarm discoloration, bring them in before you run them through the wash again. Professional treatment with targeted solvents and enzyme treatments can restore most shirts — but timing matters. The longer the stain sets, the less likely it is to come out completely.
Linen and Light Fabrics: Houston's Summer Staple
Linen is beloved in Houston summers for good reason — it's breathable, lightweight, and naturally moisture-wicking. But linen wrinkles easily, can shrink if washed improperly, and develops a characteristic "worn-in" look if sweat isn't removed before fabric is stored.
If you've been rotating through linen blazers, suits, or dresses all summer, now is a good time to bring them in for a professional clean. Linen responds exceptionally well to professional finishing — the kind of crispness you get from hand-pressing simply isn't achievable at home.
End-of-Season Cleaning: Do It Before You Store
August is also a natural moment to start thinking about fall. Before you tuck away lighter-weight summer pieces, every item should be clean — even if it "looks fine." Invisible perspiration residue left in stored fabric attracts insects (moths in particular), can cause yellowing, and develops odor over time in a closet.
A good rule: if you wore it, clean it before storing it. This is especially true for silk, cashmere-blend sweaters you might have worn on chilly air-conditioned evenings, and structured linen pieces.
